Why an Italian lawmaker’s phone call trumps Obama’s speech

April 18th, 2012

Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti’s decision to take a call from an Italian lawmaker during President Barack Obama’s speech highlights the tentativeness of his claim to authority.

When Barack Obama praised Italian?Prime Minister Mario Monti’s?work fighting his country’s debt crisis, Italy’s leader wasn’t there to listen. He was talking on his cell phone.

According to leaks from Mr. Monti’s staff, he had to take an ?urgent call? from Fabrizio Cicchitto, a senior lawmaker from former leader Silvio Berlusconi’s Freedom Party, just as the United States president began his speech during yesterday’s nuclear energy summit in Seoul. The prime minister’s?staff refused to disclose the topic of such an urgent conversation.?

While the world was well-acquainted with Mr. Berlusconi’s gaffes (such has his description of Obama as a ?young man with a nice tan?), the new prime minister’s faux-pas was quite unexpected.?Of the 52 world leaders at the summit, he was the only one who skipped Obama’s speech.?He was also the only leader openly mentioned in the same speech ? a move widely interpreted as a demonstration of Mr. Obama’s esteem.

Monti ? a former university headmaster and European commissioner with an understated, professorial manner ? seemed to fit in better than Berlusconi at international summits, making Monti well-suited to the task of restoring Italy’s image abroad. It’s one of the reasons Monti was chosen by the Italian Parliament to lead a transitional government when Berlusconi resigned last year.?

But while Monti has a better international reputation than his predecessor, at home he is much less respected.

As a crisis-time leader who was appointed, not elected, some view Monti as a lame duck hostage to a Parliament still controlled by Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party, and to them the fact that he put a Freedom party lawmaker over Obama confirms this view.

The anecdote became a hit on the Italian blogosphere and reached Twitter’s top trends, with many cracking jokes on the newly-acquired status of Mr. Cicchitto, a medium-profile politician.

Among the jokes: ?Pope Benedict had to postpone his meeting with Fidel Castro. He had to take a call from Cicchitto.?

Drake Proclaims ‘I’m A Proud Young Jewish Boy’ On ‘HYFR’ Set

April 18th, 2012

Cash Money videographer Derrick G. catches up with Drake during his re-Bar Mitzvah.

“Money just changed everything.” Those are the words that opened Drake‘s Thank Me Later album.

Hell yeah, it changed everything. Just look at Drizzy’s recently released “HYFR” video as an example. In the Director X-helmed clip, Drake stages a second Bar Mitzvah to re-establish his commitment to the Jewish faith.

“I’m proud, a proud young Jewish boy. When I had a Bar Mitzvah back in the day, my mom really didn’t have that much money. We kinda just did it in the basement of an Italian restaurant, which I guess is kinda like a faux pas,” Drake told Cash Money videographer Derrick G on the video’s Miami set. “I told myself that if I ever got rich, I’d throw myself a re-Bar Mitzvah. That’s the concept for the video.”

Drake dropped some childhood party footage at the top of the “HYFR” video, and while it looked like a good time, we’re sure it paled in comparison to his adult Bar Mitzvah, which features Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, Birdman and Trey Songz.

The behind-the-scenes documentary shows the Toronto MC interacting with his YMCMB family and his real-life family. “I have some of my mother’s friends, some of my friends,” he said to the camera, gesturing toward Birdman and Khaled, who were seated in the Miami synagogue. “Stunna Man and Khaled had to come and show their support. I learned my Torah portions; they had to come hear me read it.”

The set-visit video is filled with a ton of fun moments, but none more thrilling than when Lil Wayne performs his verse from the song. Weezy, who starts off in a suit and ski mask, begins to peel back his wardrobe with each passing rhyme until he is in a Truk Fit T-shirt, banging his skateboard across a banquet table. Birdman Jr. is clearly the life of the party.

“Maybe in the world, there might be somebody crazier and more energetic and more talented, but I don’t know where the f— they’re at,” Drake said. “This guy gets on the camera every single time and kills that sh–. That’s why he’s Lil Wayne.”

‘Hunger Games’ Star Josh Hutcherson Calls Director Gary Ross ‘My Guy’

April 13th, 2012

‘I think he’s a genius,’ Hutcherson told MTV News hours before Ross departed franchise.

Before it was confirmed that rumors were at a fever pitch, Hutcherson didn’t want to imagine the second film without Ross there to direct it. “I have talked to him. I think Gary’s my guy,” Hutcherson told MTV News at the “Detention” junket.

With Ross’ fate now decided, the young actor only had high praise for the man who directed the blockbuster first film in the series, “The Hunger Games.” “I think he’s a genius. He’s an incredible writer and director, so I’m excited to see kind of what he ends up coming up with for the second one,” he said, adding that he had no other names he wanted to toss in the directorial ring if and when Ross shouldn’t return.

“No, I won’t let myself [say] someone else,” he added. “Not until they tell me it has to be someone else. Gary’s my guy 100 percent.” Well, now might be the time for Hutcherson to start brainstorming new directors he might want to work with once production kicks off.

In a statement released late Monday when the news broke, Ross addressed the speculation and commended the film’s studio, Lionsgate, for giving him the freedom to make the film he wanted to. “Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct ‘Catching Fire,’ ” Ross said in his statement. “As a writer and a director, I simply don’t have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.

“I loved making ‘The Hunger Games’ — it was the happiest experience of my professional life,” the statement continued.

“Lionsgate was supportive of me in a manner that few directors ever experience in a franchise: They empowered me to make the film I wanted to make and backed the movie in a way that requires no explanation beyond the remarkable results. And contrary to what has been reported, negotiations with Lionsgate have not been problematic. They have also been very understanding of me through this difficult decision.

“I also cannot say enough about the people I worked with: Producer Nina Jacobson, a great collaborator and a true friend; the brilliant Suzanne Collins, who entrusted us with her most amazing and important story; the gifted and remarkable Jennifer Lawrence, whose performance exceeded my wildest expectations, and the rest of the incredible cast, whom I am proud to call my friends,” he continued. “To the fans I want to say thank you for your support your faith, your enthusiasm and your trust. Hard as this may be to understand, I am trying to keep that trust with you. Thank you all. It’s been a wonderful experience.”

OnLive migrates to Windows Server 2008, sidesteps licensing concerns

Just this time last month, we reported that OnLive was in hot water with Microsoft over the company’s ostensible lack of proper licenses for its remote virtualization software — you know, the app that gave Android and iOS users free access to Windows 7 and Office 2010. Just recently, OnLive Desktop transitioned to Windows Server 2008 R2, and while neither company has confirmed suspicions, the move may be sufficient to satisfy the licensing requirements for both the operating system and Microsoft Office. Due to their similar foundation, most consumers are unlikely to notice the difference with the Aero theme active, and while the Windows 7 virtual keyboard is no longer available, OnLive has already replaced it with a mobile-inspired alternative. Let this be a lesson, kids: it helps to play by the rules — especially when there are plenty of loopholes.

Mesothelioma lawyers: What Is the Difference between …

April 11th, 2012

Mesothelioma and lung cancer are two types of cancer. To that extent, they are related, but otherwise they are quite different.

Lung cancer affects the lungs proper. This includes the bronchi (tubes that carry air into the lungs) and the alveoli (air sacs, where oxygen and carbon dioxide cross to and from the blood stream). Most often lung cancer originates in the most immediate parts of the lung, the epithelial cells of the bronchi.

Mesothelioma, on the other hand, affects the membrane that enfolds the lungs, which are called the pleura.

Lung cancer is relatively common, the third most common type of cancer (after breast and prostate cancers), and it results in more cancer deaths than any other type. Mesothelioma is a relatively rare type of cancer, with only 2500 cases diagnosed per year, about 1/100 the number of lung cancer cases.

Lung cancer has many potential causes. Most lung cancer is attributable to smoking, but it may also be caused by car and chemical fumes, radon exposure, and asbestos exposure. However, pleural mesothelioma has only one cause: asbestos.

If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma, you may be able to receive compensation for your illness from those who exposed you to asbestos.

To learn whether you might be able to receive compensation for your illness, please contact The Law Office of Matthew E. Kiely for a free consultation today.
